How to Be Successful in an Escape Room

If you’re planning on paying us a visit here at Escape Peterborough, you’re probably wondering what you can do to be successful. It’s not the end of the world if you’re not, because you’re always welcome to come and try again as many times as you like. We have lots of people who come and try to beat the clock.

Today, we’re looking at how you can be successful in an escape room and we have no doubt that once you’ve read our tips, you’ll be well on the way to successfully beating the clock.

A good team with a mix of skills is a strong team

As you know an escape room is a game where you are locked in a room and have to solve a series of clues before you can escape. In order to have a chance of success, you need to have a good team with a lot of different talent to bring to the game. You’ll be looking for good maths skills, someone attentive, someone logical and some people with excellent problem-solving skills. And of course, you want people who are good at communicating and working as part of a team.

Search every nook and corner

Once you start looking for clues make sure you look everywhere, top, bottom and in every corner you can find. Once you find the clues, place each one in a central place where you can go back to them once you have found them all. Don’t leave them somewhere where you may lose them and have to start searching for them all-over again.

Don’t remain stuck on one clue

Don’t stick to one clue if you’re stuck, go on to the next and come back to it afresh. Time spent on one clue for too long and you’ll waste precious time. Work methodically and calmly and you have a better chance of success.

Don’t allow any one person to dominate the game, they may lead the team astray

This isn’t a platform for one person with a loud voice and an ego to satisfy to demonstrate their talent, this is a game that needs everyone to have their say and work as part of a team, so allow this to happen. It helps if your team has a mixture of different characteristics that all compliment each other. That’s preferable to a group of people who are very quiet and introverted or a group of extroverts who are fighting to be the loudest, funniest and the most dominant.

Military Style Boot Camp

This isn’t for everyone, but if your team are fairly healthy with a reasonable level of fitness, then they may want to try out a military style boot camp. These types of camps are usually put together by ex-military and they’ll be the right people to put your team through this gruelling yet fun boot camp. It’ll be a great way of identifying your team’s strengths and their weaknesses as well as getting them out and about taking part in some healthy exercise.

Cook Off?

You could split your team into two and then pit them against each other with a cooking challenge. By creating new recipes and dishes together they’ll be thinking carefully about how they can win, challenging each other’s skills, trying very hard to create the best dish of all.

Volleyball, Zipwire and Beachball.

Games of this nature can be great fun and a perfect opportunity to bond with each other. They can pick up new skills, and you can identify ones they didn’t know they even had, so back at the office, you can utilise them to best effect. If they’re playing against each other, it’s all about teamwork, victory and competition, with no particular individual allowed to dominate, everyone must work together.

Board Games

Yes, you could have a games tournament with your team split into separate groups where they can pit themselves against each other in a mini-tournament. You can even do it at work in a separate room where each person can leave their desk for a designated period of time to compete. It doesn’t matter what it is, whether it’s Jenga or simple card games, if it gets people talking to each other and breaks the ice with new members, then it’s a worthwhile endeavour. You’ll also be able to see who’s good at working out puzzles and problems and how they work their way through any obstacles.

Why Are Escape Rooms So Popular

There are plenty of reasons why our Escape rooms are so popular and we’ll be going over some of them today. There has been a growing trend for escape rooms here in the UK in recent years and it continues to be a growing phenomenon. An attractive attribute of Escape Rooms are that they are fantastic for the family activities, corporate events and team building events.

What Is An Escape Room Then?

If you don’t know what an escape room is, then you will find this blog insightful. An escape room is a concept so simple you wonder how on earth you didn’t come up with it yourself. It consists of you being  part of a group of people who are locked in a room, usually a room with a theme, and then finding their way out in 60 minutes. In that 60 minutes, you’ll have a series of clues, cryptic, puzzles and maps which they use to help escape. A group is better than one person, because you help each other out – and that’s where the team bit comes in.

Team Building Activities Are Popular With Corporate Companies

It also explains why they’re so popular with corporate firms because they help with team building activities. They help improve critical thinking, problem-solving and lateral thinking. The team must work together, and as a result they communicate better. You also have the benefit of finding out what their skills are so you can utilise them to best effect when you’re back in the office.

Escape Games Are For Everyone

How to Be Successful in Escape Rooms

How can you be successful in our escape rooms? If you want to win within the 60 minutes you’re in there, you’ll need a strategy and you’ll need the right people with you in your team before you start. Thankfully, you’ve got us to help you, so just get in there and read our fabulous guide to be the most successful you can be in our escape rooms.

Carefully Choose Who You Take With You

Firstly, which group people do you plan on taking with you? Do they all possess the skills needed to win? But what are those skills? Well, what you need are skills such as attention to detail, ideally someone who is really observant. You also want people who are good at communicating and working as part of a team. It’s not all about one individual, the better you all work together, the better the chance of escaping. You don’t someone who’s going to start squabbling with other people in order to get out.

If you’re stuck, let the games-master know!

If you need a clue, don’t be afraid to ask for one, because it may be the difference between getting out or losing. If you really are stuck then don’t be a schmuck, let whoever is running the game know and ask for that all important clue.

Don’t lose your clues!

As you collect all your clues once you’ve found them, the last thing you want to do is lose them all. Find a safe place to keep them until you reach the end. What you don’t want is to misplace one or two of them and then not be able to decipher the remaining clues to get out. You’ll need all of them not just a few, in order for them to make sense.

Peterborough is a beautiful cathedral city in England and we can’t wait for you to visit. If it’s your first time, you’ll not be disappointed. To help you, we’ve come up with a list of places to visit so your time here will be well spent.

Peterborough Cathedral

The cathedral that makes Peterborough a city is one impressive building, both architecturally and historically fascinating, it’s well worth a visit. It’s a Normal cathedral and was found as a monastic community back in 654 AD. It’s seen some action over the years and is the burial place of two important queens and also a place that experienced the Civil War. You’ll get a sense of the history of the place, and while you’re there you can admire the beautiful stained-glass windows and marvel at the amazing architecture.

Ferry Meadows Country Park (walks, water sports)

This is a beautiful place where you can walk, cycle and play, as well as explore the park on a horse, jog, walk the dog or ride on the train. There’s plenty of lakes, meadows and forest to explore and it’s only a few miles from the city centre. There are some lovely cafes for you to refresh yourself and there’s disabled access with hard surfaced routes for any wheelchair users throughout the park, and plenty of room for fun and games for all the family.

Railworld

It’s been here since the mid-nineties, a place where habitats and different species can thrive, and thrive it does with over 200 different species of flora and fauna. Once a coal storage yard and then bought for Railworld by Reverend Richard Paten it’s a place where he wanted wildlife to live and prosper, so he created the perfect site where this could happen. Three parts of the Victorian Great Northern Railway aqueduct where donated and were then installed within the wildlife haven. It’s a great place for children and adults to learn about British wildlife.

Flag Fen

This is an Archaeology Park and within it you’ll find the most impressive wooden monument. Built nearly 4,000 years ago it was used by Prehistoric fen people where they would perform rituals and use it as a place of worship. There’s all sorts of fascinating details you’re going to love, and if you love archaeology, it’s definitely a place you should visit.

Escape Rooms are popular and there’s one popping up in almost every town and city, question is, why? Today, we’re going to be tackling that very question, so read on to find out why escape rooms are so popular and why you should be the one who tries it next!

Give Yourself an Escape Route

While most of us lead such busy lives, escape rooms gives us…. well....a means of escape. It’s a place where we can forget the daily grind and transport ourselves into another world. This is a world where you can be someone else if you want, or just yourself having a good time. You’re in a room with friends and you can leave behind the stresses and strains of modern life and forget about all that for now. This unique experience requires full immersion so there’s no time to dwell on the outside world.

Get Your Adrenaline Going

And that adrenaline rush is superb, that sense of real urgency, where you only have one hour, 60 minutes in which to escape. It’s fast paced and exciting and this is what makes people want to come back for more. Not everyone gets it first time, an hour isn’t long if you’re doing this for the first time, but people come back because they want to get it right, or perhaps they got out, but now they want to improve on their original time.

Themed Rooms So You Can Really Immerse Yourself

The rooms are themed, so you can be in any time or place of your choosing, just pick the room that appeals to you the most. Whether it’s the wild west, the world of casinos or a world of mysterious witchcraft, perhaps you may prefer a little Sherlock mystery or perhaps you’d like to be transported to Renaissance Italy – the choice is yours.

For The Love of The Game

And who doesn’t love a game? It’s a refreshing experience to be playing a real live game where you interact with real people, instead of everyone being immersed in your phone or tablet. There’s the same sense of accomplishment at the end of it and that great feeling of reward and of winning. As with other games and sports, the praise at the end of it and that sweet feeling of success when you win is all you need to make you feel re-energised and ready to join the world again.

Top Hints for Escape Rooms

Are you ready for your escape room experience? You might be ready and full of excitement, or perhaps you’re full of fear at the thought of being locked in and not knowing what to do. Don’t be, because in our post today we’re going to be going through some hints and tips on how to get out of an escape room successfully.

Team Building Activities With Your Employer

Firstly, if it’s a team building activity, you’re not going to have much choice who you share your room with, but it is a good opportunity to showcase your skills and show how good you are at communicating with your fellow workers. So, be on your best behaviour and take advantage of an away day from the office desk where you can really shine.

Make Sure You Choose People You Get On With

If you’re going as part of a group of friends try to choose people you know you’re not only going to get on with, but who also bring along the requisite skills to help you all escape. The goal of the exercise is to solve a range of hidden cryptic clues and puzzles, so you can get out in under an hour. You need people who have great communication and problem-solving skills and who can think and act on their feet. Naturally, you need to be able to get on with them, because in an enclosed space with no means of escape until you solve the clues, you’re going to be locked in up close and personal, cheek to jowl. Better that you surround yourself with people you get on with.

Keep Your Clues Safe

Yes, we said the clues are hidden, in which case you need to be sharp-eyed, prepared to search high and low for those all-important clues. Once you find them, don’t discard them and immediately run off to find the next. What you need to be doing is keeping all the clues you find together in a safe place, so once you’ve found all of them, you can sit down and work them out. If you’ve lost one of them in all the excitement, then it could unravel your plans to escape the room – so be careful.

Communication Is Key

We’ve already referred to communication once already, but as you can imagine, communication is key to escaping. If you think you have an idea of what a clue means, then do make sure the rest of the team hear you. Make sure that everyone has an opportunity to be heard, and that you all have your say. Don’t let one person dominate, each member of the team should be able to contribute in a meaningful way.

Check Timings

Keep in mind that one hour isn’t very long. It’s important therefore to use that 60 minutes you do have very carefully. Don’t spend too much time on the one clue, forgetting about all the others there are still to discover, you may find that by coming back to that clue you’re stuck on later, that it’s easier to solve.

Most importantly of all, it’s important to enjoy yourself. There’s no point turning up and then getting stressed out by the clues and puzzles, so you enjoy none of it. You may not even escape in time, but if that is the case, remember that at least you tried, and you can always try again, and why wouldn’t you? This is the best fun to have in an hour.

What are the Benefits of Team Building Activities?

We’re looking at the benefits of team building activities and if you manage a team. We know that sometimes a group simply doesn’t gel, and if you have a new project to work on this is essential, so if you’re looking to break the ice and get your team on-board, then a day out on a team building activity might be just the thing they need.

So, what are the benefits of team building activities?

Communication and problem-solving. If they are working as a team together on a team building exercise outside of the office environment, they will have to speak and communicate. They’ll be involved in carrying out tasks and without talking and collaborating nothing will happen. This should help with the bonding process, helping to break the ice, which should have a positive impact once they’re back in the office.

Competition + Getting Results = Winning Big Time

Yes, it may well get that element of competitive spirit working and that is a good thing, getting results is a feeling your team are going to love. That competitiveness will hopefully transfer over to the workplace and this benefits everyone.

Get Social

If your team socialise outside the office it gives them a wonderful opportunity to bond and get to know each other in a more relaxed atmosphere than back in the office. It gives people the right environment to take their guard down and be themselves and you may find that it increases productivity once they’re back at base, once they feel at ease in each other’s company.

Increased Work Performance

You find that your team performs better once they’re back at work, they’ve come to know each other’s strengths and understand who is good at what, whether that be maths, communicating instructions, working out complex information. Whatever it is they’ll have a better idea of where their strengths lie and utilise them effectively.

Once you’ve broken down barriers, your team will have improved problem-solving skills, they won’t feel as self-conscious as they did before, especially new team members who are concerned as to where they fit in. They’ll be better able to communicate their issues and work-related problems, therefore able to sort difficulties out quickly so they can get on with the job in hand.
